Blepharitis: Signs and Symptoms

0ab464c68c8b2e49717112bb61e57806Blepharitis is an all-too-common eye condition involving the inflammation of the eyelids as the result of oily particles and bacteria coating the eyelid near the base of the lashes. While the exact cause of blepharitis is a matter of some debate, it is largely considered to be linked to bacterial eye infections, dry eye symptoms or certain skin conditions. Symptoms of blepharitis often include:

  • Itching, irritation, burning and a sensation as though you have something in your eye.
  • Exceedingly dry eyes
  • An inability to comfortably wear contact lenses for as long as one used to each day.
  • Red, dry and even slightly bloody eyelids.
  • Occasional blurriness of vision as a result of poor tear film.

In allergic blepharitis, one may note

  • An “allergic shiner,” a dark, “raccoon-like” appearance around the eyes.
  • Yellow or green fluid discharge, causing the eyelids to stick together, particularly as a person wakes up in the morning.

Blepharitis may also cause a sty as it further affects the skin of the eye lid. If medical treatment is not effective, an incision may be used to drain fluids from the eye.

Unfortunately, chronic blepharitis has been known to cause some damage to the visual system over time, effecting a person’s ability to see and directly impacting their eyeglass or contact lens prescription.

Speaking about the need for proper eyelid hygiene to prevent this inconvenient and possibly damaging eye condition, Dr. Prajapati comments,” The eyelids are the only part of our body that never get cleaned properly or at all. Just like we need to go to the dentist for oral hygiene maintenance at least two times a year some blepharitis sufferers may need lid hygiene maintenance at least two times a year. Also, just like we need to brush our teeth daily blepharitis patients need to continue their lid hygiene treatment daily at home.”

A special thank you to all our patients and customers for making 2013 a great year! We at Triangle Family Eye Care love what we do which helps echo our mission statement, ‘See better, Feel better, Live well’. We wish you a Happy Holidays and look forward to heading into the New Year.

Your Child’s Eyes

Did you know…….

Vision accounts for as much as 80 percent of the learning process for a child
25 percent of students in grades K to 6 have visual problems that are serious enough to impede learning
An estimated 80 percent of children with a learning disability have an undiagnosed vision problem
Undetected vision problems are often misdiagnosed as dyslexia or ADD/ADHD, because they share symptoms of fatigue, fidgeting, and frustration in the classroom

What we have found is that most parents do not bring their child in for an eye exam unless they fail the pediatrician’s visual screening. By that time it is already too late. Since refractive disorder related vision issues are progressive we can assume that your child has been deprived of good vision for the last 1-2 years by the time they need glasses. This is why we call most eye exams routine or wellness exams.

But I thought I could see well???

General refractive disorders of the eye such as myopia (nearsightedness), astigmatism (misshaped front surface of eye), and hyperopia (farsightedness) are progressive in nature and many people do not think they have a vision problem until the eye doctor diagnoses it. Most children will never tell you they have a vision problem. Adults do not detect a vision issue unless it’s significant or they fail their drivers license test. All the more reason to get a comprehensive eye exam annually. Your general doctor or your child’s pediatrician do not perform a thorough visual exam to catch sight problems or vision related issues. Many people around this area work on a computer 40+ hours a week and that affects the accommodating muscles of the eyes as well as causes dry eyes. Your eye doctor can help with all these issues. Nevertheless, the take home message is don’t always rely on your judgement when it comes to your eyes and vision – let our expertise and technology help with that.

Gotta’ Love What You Do

I set up my practice so I could reach out to more people and help them see better. This is the best part of what we do…..helping people see better which makes them feel better. But I think it starts with loving what you do. I definitely love what I do. From taking that 5 year old to see better in school so he/she can learn well to introducing contacts for the first time to a 15yo so they can play their sports better to educating and helping our computer patients see better up close after 40 so they don’t get end of the day headaches to treating and managing glaucoma and macular degeneration in an 80 year old so they can still see and play with their grandchildren – it’s all very gratifying and I love it! Seeing the happy expressions on all these peoples’ faces is truely priceless.

Why do I need an Eye Exam after Lasik?

If you had Lasik and see well it does not mean the Health of your eyes are immune to glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, etc. The main reason a routine eye exam is recommended annually is to obviously check your vision AND the health of your eyes. Anyone can have glaucoma at any age and glaucoma is potentially a blinding eye disease. Also, kids should have their eyes checked regularly (some every 6 months) due to risk of lazy eye. Going back to lasik – if your eyes before lasik were really bad then you are still at higher risk of retinal tear or detachment….that does not change after lasik.

Oh no I have a Red Eye!

Most of us have had some sort of “pink eye” issue before. My best advice is get it checked out by an EYE DOCTOR and not your primary care doctor or closest Urgent Care clinic. The problem is a red or pink eye could be allergic, viral, bacterial, inflammatory, etc. and only an eye doctor’s clinic can better identify which one. For example, I had a patient of mine go to an urgent care facility over the weekend and they diagnosed a corneal abrasion. The next day he came to me because his eye was getting worse and it turned out he had viral conjunctivitis that ended up going to his other eye. The moral of the story……non-eyecare facilities do not have the equipment to properly view the eye therefore misdiagnosis is common.

Back To School time

Here at Triangle Family Eye Care we can’t stress enough how important it is to get your childs’ eyes checked. My daughter needed glasses at the age of 4 and the scary thing was she had no symptoms. Her vision problem was only in one eye and detected on routine examination. The other eye was seeing good and compensating for the bad eye. Now she is almost 6 and loves wearing her glasses b/c they balance her vision and I can rest assure she will not have a lazy eye! Did you know that 80% of learning is done through the eyes. Undetected and untreated vision disorders result in delayed reading and outcomes in school children. Moreso a visual disability can create a learning disability.

Upcoming Events

Park West Village will be having the shopping center Grand Opening on Saturday, June 2nd from 4-9pm with Fireworks extravaganza to conclude the event. It will be a very ‘kids friendly’ event so bring the whole family. Triangle Family Eye Care will have special clinic hours that day also…..we will be open for eye exams from 2-6pm! We will also be giving many “goodies” away at the event.

The second upcoming event TFEC will be participating in is the St. Judes Children’s Hospital walk-a-thon on Sunday, July 15 at Morrisville Park. Please stop by and see us at our booth.

Welcome

We all know everyone should have regular annual physicals but at that physical the doctor does not do a comprehensive check on your eyes. I like to call an eye exam, “A physical for your eyes”, which everyone should have once a year regardless if your vision is good or bad. In my almost 9 years I can’t tell you how many times people think they see great and turns out they can’t, in fact, many of those folks would have failed the NC DMV test. The scariest thing, to me, is anyone could have glaucoma or worse a tumor in their eye and not even know it until it’s too late. So please have a comprehensive eye exam every year.
